Visit Scotland Information about Castle Douglas

The town of Castle Douglas is just over 200 years old and steeped in history. With it’s own castle, Threave, built by Archibald Douglas, known as ‘Archibald the Grim’ at the end of the 1300’s. The remains of this castle are only 1 mile from the town via a scenic walk or minutes by car, which can be visited today, nestled on an island in the middle of boggy marsh land, water and woodland. To access the castle you must ring the bell for the custodian to escort you by boat.

In 1789, Sir William Douglas planned and then built a ‘cotton town’ and named it after himself. The Georgian street pattern of Castle Douglas is all that now remains of Sir William’s ambitious plan. It was in agriculture rather than industry that helped Castle Douglas prospers as a market and commercial centre throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and to present day. With trading of sheep and cattle still abundant today, in the town’s Wallets Mart, and  an impressive array of shops on King street, Castle Douglas offers it’s own unique character and is a little gem in the heart of Dumfries and Galloway.

Threave house and gardens is situated only 1 mile from Castle Douglas offering a 64-acre ornamental garden, which is open throughout the year, with a varied plant collection and landscape features. Threave is a garden for all seasons and best know for its spectacular springtime display of daffodils, as well as summer displays from the beds and borders and stunning autumn colours of the trees and from the heather garden. Enjoy a walk around the gardens then maybe take a look inside the Plant Centre for a memento of your visit. Then on to the walled garden and glass houses, which are also open all year round.
The Scottish Baronial House is open to the public, with its graceful staircase leading to a suite of interconnecting rooms around the Square Hall. The Drawing Room and Dinning Room are wonderfully sunny rooms, with huge bay windows. The Visitor Centre Terrace Restaurant over looks the stunning gardens and also has some gifts, arts and crafts for sale.
